U.N.workable Solutions

Once again Belmont Club nails it. Wretchard (yes, that's his nom de plume) contrasts the failed UN peacekeeping mission in Congo with the UN's angst over the United States not taking people's crap anymore. The man who wrote the proposed reforms for collective security feels pre-emptive strikes to stop mass-murder in the Congo are good, but America striking pre-emptively at mass-murderer Saddam Hussein is bad. Read the entire article, it's lengthy but well worth the time.

What Wretchard didn't say--exactly--but I will is: the UN lacks a principled moral foundation. They believe that if the US acts pre-emptively than any nation that feels itself threatened, or simply desires to subsume a rival, will declare pre-emptive action. So far so good, even I wouldn't want some aggressor state to declare a bogus national threat just to grant itself license to act militarily. This is exactly what Saddam did in August of 1990 when he invaded Kuwait.

But herein lies the crucial difference. The UN has it's panties in a wad because they feel the Iraq War of 2003 was nothing more than America going it alone in its own self-interest. Yet, nothing can be further from the demonstrated truth. Only in the minds of the existentialist French is it debatable as to whether or not Resolution 1441 authorized the Coalition to resume hostilities against Saddam Hussein in 2003. I say resume, because the 1991 ceasefire agreement and subsequent 17 UN resolutions all demanded full cooperation from Iraq--or else. Seeing as Hans Blix said Iraq was NOT co-operating the UN was not only authorized to act it could be argued it was obligated to act by force of its own dictates. The fact that not all members of the Security Council or UN in general could or would participate is beside the point. No UN resolution ever passed saying we should not attack Iraq.

However, this is merely a specific issue relating to a greater point. Consider the fact that true aggresor states are not going to consult the UN Security Council regardless of whatever papers we wave in front of them. Remember how the UN sat impotent to stop the Soviet suppression of the democracy movements in Hungary and Czechloslovakia. It was idle in Tibet, Rwanda, the Congo and now the Sudan. It sure the heck isn't stopping France from firing on unarmed protesters in the Ivory Coast.

Another sore point to consider is the fact that the UN is dominated by thugs, profiteers and dictators. Israel could broadcast live footage of the Iranian preparing a missile and tell the UN that it is seeking to launch a pre-emptive strike against what would surely be a nuclear assault by the mad mullahs of Tehran. Well, the security council would authorize a use of force resolution--for Iran because it is being threatened by the Israeli Air Force! Such is the degraded state of the UN today.

The fact of the matter is, the UN cannot even decide on a common definition of terrorism because a sizable portion of its Arab constituency believe the Palestinians have a right to blow-up teenaged Israelis in pizza parlors. How can such people with hope to lecture us with any sense of moral or intellectual sincerity?

They can't, not until the world body gains the moral foundation it lacks. Not everyone may agree to those moral principles, but that's OK, membership is not compulsary. We cannot abolish, "Thou shalt not steal" simply because too many thieves find it inconvenient too their way of life.

Ethnic Cleansing Alert: America

A school principal in Georgia got into trouble for reading the following poem over the intercom. If we do not stop this mad, headlong dash to cleanse all mention of religion (well, the Christian religion anyway, we should have a dollar everytime we're told Islam is a religion of peace following each terrorist outrage) the last line of the prayer may fast become rather prescient:

Now I sit me down in school / Where praying is against the rule / For this great nation under God / Finds mention of Him very odd. / If Scripture now the class recites, / It violates the Bill of Rights. / And anytime my head I bow / Becomes a Federal matter now. / Our hair can be purple, orange or green, / That's no offense; it's a freedom scene. / The law is specific, the law is precise. / Prayers spoken aloud are a serious vice. / For praying in a public hall / Might offend someone with no faith at all. / In silence alone we must meditate, / God's name is prohibited by the state. / We're allowed to cuss and dress like freaks, / And pierce our noses, tongues and cheeks. / They've outlawed guns, but FIRST the Bible. / To quote the Good Book makes me liable. / We can elect a pregnant Senior Queen, /And the ``unwed daddy,'' our Senior King. / It's ``inappropriate'' to teach right from wrong, / We're taught that such ``judgments'' do not belong. / We can get our condoms and birth controls, / Study witchcraft, vampires and totem poles. / But the Ten Commandments are not allowed, / No word of God must reach this crowd. / It's scary here I must confess, / When chaos reigns the school's a mess. / So, Lord, this silent plea I make: / Should I be shot, my soul please take!

Obviously as a public school official he neglected to teach those who registered the complaint the meaning of the word, "irony." Heaven help the poor man if he dares to say, "God bless you" to a sneezing atheist.

I'm not even going to mention every instance of how religion is being expunged from [EDIT: Winter holiday season] because it would take so long I would be here until [EDIT: Spring festival].

Wasting No Opportunity to Look Like a Schmuck

DNC Chairman and Michael Moore's personal lap poodle, Terry McAuliffe, injected politics into his December 7th memorial speech.

Speaking of December 7th...

Today marks the 63rd anniversary of the day Japan made us decide to destroy 2,000 years of their civilization, invalidate their religion of Shintoism and impose a free-market democracy upon them even though they had absolutely no history of it.

They seem to be doing pretty good and are kind of happy with the results, don't you think?

NOTE: The only difference between Japan 1945 and Iraq 2003 is, praise be to God, we're handling the dirty work with body counts measured in the low thousands instead of millions.
